RFA Department Marine Engineering
Location (now) Brixham, Devon
Favourite Ship No particular favourite. Black Rover, Brambleleaf, Fort Austin, Sir Percivale and Mounts Bay would be on my short list.
Biography/Remarks I Joined the RFA in September 1975 as Engineer Cadet. Attended Southampton College of Technology until 1979.
First ship as Cadet was Black Rover followed by Tidepool and Stromness. I opted to pursue a career in motor ships.
First ship as Junior Engineer was Sir Lancelot. Have served aboard most of the fleet in the ensuing 40 years, even the odd steamship.
Notable exceptions being Oakleaf and Argus which I have never set foot aboard, even socially.
Highest rank attained was T/A MEO of Sir Percivale after the 1997 Hong Kong withdrawal.
Last ship in the RFA was Mounts Bay which I joined in Djibouti in Oct 2013 and took into lay up and major refit in Falmouth in Jan 2014.
I paid off Mounts Bay as 1/O(E) and watched her sail from A&P Falmouth on 28 Sept 2015 after a successful refit and reacceptance back into Fleet. At 2 weeks short of 2 years this was my longest appointment and the perfect way for me to run down to retirement.
My last day on pay in the RFA is 08 January 2016.
